How to Apply for Smart ID Card at Bank Branch
The Smart ID Card online application process is straightforward and requires an online appointment. To start with the application, follow the steps:
Step 1. Register online
Visit the eHomeAffairs portal and create an account. Input your personal information as prompted.
Step 2. Submit Smart ID Card online application
Log in to your account. Click “Create New Application” and select Smart ID. Complete the Smart ID card application form and upload your supporting documents.
Step 3. Make payment
The application fee can be paid online via Internet banking or credit card. Select a payment method and initiate payment.
Step 4. Book an appointment
Select a local bank branch near you and an available date and time slot. Make a booking and you will receive a confirmation letter, which should be printed.

FNB, short for First National Bank, provides Smart ID card and passport services in 8 branches. To get a smart ID in FNB, you need to have an FNB account.
- ABSA Smart ID Card application:
As the largest banking group, ABSA partnered with the Department of Home Affairs, offering Smart ID card and passport application services for its clients. There are four ABSA ID application branches available in the country.
- Nedbank ID application:
If you are a client of Nedbank, you may apply for a smart ID or passport in five selected Nedbank branches. The application process at Nedbank is the same as the other banks.
- Standard Bank ID application:
Eight Standard Bank branches are now equipped to facilitate smart ID card and passport applications. You’ll need to be registered for Standard Bank internet banking to do so.
