The DV 2025 results date is on or about May 4, 2024. Online registration for the DV program for Fiscal Year 2025 is available from 12:00 noon EDT (GMT -4) on October 4, 2023, to 12:00 noon EST (GMT -5) on November 7, 2023. 55,000 green card numbers will be randomly selected.
Eligibility for Green Card Lottery
This program is not open to nationals from countries with a high rate of immigration to the US for the past 5 years, including Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Venezuela, and Vietnam. The biggest change is that citizens from the United Kingdom and its dependent territories are allowed to participate for the first time in years.
Nationals of the country above can still register supposing that their spouse or their parents are from the eligible countries.
In addition to nationality, the authority also requires applicants to have at least a high school certificate (or equivalent) or at least 2 years of working experience in the last 5 years. A high school education or equivalent refers to a 12-year course of elementary and secondary school while the certificate of correspondence courses are not acceptable. The working experience should be related to an occupation that needs at least two years of training or experience.
How Does DV Lottery Work?
Not all qualified applicants will be granted the DV Lottery visa. In this section, we will talk about the complete process from application to approval.
Registration
After confirming your eligibility for the program, the first step is to submit entries online, before which you are supposed to visit the official website of the US Department of State and click on the “DV-2025 Entry Instructions” button to learn about how to fill out the complete the electronic Diversity Lottery Entry Form.
You must provide specific personal information in the form, including full name, gender, date of birth, place of birth, entrant photograph(s), mailing address, country of residence, phone number, email address, the highest level of education, current marital status, and number of children. It is recommended to complete the form on your own. If you do have to turn to a visa consultant or agent, you should also be present to make sure the answer is correct. In any case, you must note down the unique confirmation number and print out the confirmation page which is used to check the entry status.
Please note that late entries or paper entries will not be acceptable. Although the deadline for entry submission is 12:00 noon EST (GMT -5) on November 7, 2023, it is suggested to file the application as early as possible in case of network congestion or failure at the last minute. Last but not least, it is only allowed one submission per person, so don’t resubmit it again and again. Individuals will be disqualified once multiple entries are detected or the form is incomplete or incorrect.
Selection
After receiving all entry forms, the Department of State will select Green Card Lottery “winners” randomly with the computer according to the allocations of available visas in each region and country. Please note that the authority will not inform the selectees by letter or email. Entrant Status Check on the official website will be the only method to learn about the results and we will talk about it later.
Apply for a DV Lottery Visa
You will be guided to a detailed instruction page after confirming that you have been selected for the DV-2025 program. In order to get an immigration visa, DV selectees must complete the DS-260 online and have an interview at the consular. Consular officers will investigate your background, criminal records and other information related to security issues.
Selectees must obtain during the fiscal year 2025 (from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025). Visas will be issued every month as long as there are visas available. The program will stop if all DV lottery visas have been issued or the fiscal year 2025 ends. Late application will not be accepted and your DV benefits will not be carried over to the following year.
Pay for DV Lottery Visa Fees
It is free of charge to submit entry, but you need to pay for the visa while attending the interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate. The DV Lottery fee is $330.00 per person. The cashier will give you a U.S. government receipt for payment. Don’t pay by mail, Western Union, or delivery.
FAQs
👉How can I check the DV Lottery result if I forget my confirmation number?
You can retrieve the confirmation number through email. Just go to the CheckConfirmation tool and enter your personal information and email address.
👉Can DV lottery result change?
Yes, it probably can be. At times, there weren’t sufficient eligible candidates to fill all 55,000 Diversity Immigrant Visas in a given year, despite selecting winners in the DV Lottery. To meet the quota, a second draw was held within the same year to randomly choose more winners and ensure the full allocation of visas.
👉How many times can I check my DV lottery results?
No limits. You can check any times if you like during the result checking periods. However, note that checking multiple times doesn’t change the DV lottery results.
👉If my eligibility is based on my spouse, can I get an immigrant visa alone?
No. The authority will issue the visa only when your spouse is also eligible. You must enter the US together with your spouse. This also applies if your eligibility is based on your parents.
👉Does the list of countries whose natives are eligible remain the same for years?
No. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) counts the number of immigrants for the previous five years yearly and screens out countries with high admissions. Therefore, the list might change annually.
👉What occupations are qualified for work experience requirements?
There are more than 1,000 qualified occupation titles in the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) database. You can search in the O*NET OnLine Database to see whether your occupation is eligible.
👉Is there an age limit for the DV Program?
No, as long as the applicant satisfies the educational or working experience requirements.
👉Can I submit an entry when I have been in the US?
Yes, there is no limit to where the entrant is.
👉If I am rejected, can I re-enter again next year?
Yes, you are allowed to submit the entry form only once during the registration period, but you can submit it every fiscal year until you are selected. Besides the DV lottery program, there’re other ways to get a green card faster than 90 days. Do related research to enhance the chances of obtaining a green card.
👉If both my spouse and I are eligible, shall we submit separate entry forms?
Yes, and if either of you is chosen, the other can apply as a derivative dependent.
👉Must I include my spouse in my entry?
It depends on the marriage status. He/she must be listed when you are in the legal marriage status whether you are living together or not, or are planning to immigrate to the US together. He/she is not required to be listed when you are in legal separation or he/she is already a US citizen or a legal US Permanent Resident.
👉Must I include my children in my entry?
It depends on the marital conditions and age of your children. Those who are younger than 21 and haven’t got married should be listed. They could be your natural children, adopted children or stepchildren under a current or previous legal marriage unless they are already US citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents.
👉Must I include my parents and siblings in my entry?
No, and they are not eligible to receive a Green Card Lottery as dependents.
👉Can I ask someone else to help me submit my entry or check my entrant status?
Yes, and make sure the information must be complete and accurate in any case. Anyone who has your confirmation number can access the Entrant Status Check system.
👉How do I know I have submitted the entry successfully and avoid repeated submission?
Once you receive a confirmation number, it means your entry is successfully recorded.
👉What if I am already in the United States when selected?
You can adjust your status to Permanent Resident with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before the expiration date of the Diversity Visa program.
👉What other program can I attend besides the DV lottery program?
The US government offers another lottery program for people who wish to live and work in the US. It’s called the H1B Visa Lottery. Though this program has stricter requirements, it is always worth a try.
